Each doctoral student in the PRL receives
- a stipend (in 2007, $20,940 for first-year students),
- a waiver of tuition and fees for nine credit hours (considered a full load),
- in-state tuition rates for additional credits,
- and health insurance.
DOE funding provides the stipend for the first two years of study; the student's mentor assumes this responsibility for the third and subsequent years.
In addition to this support, each calendar year students and postdocs receive funding to attend scientific meetings. Many are able to supplement this with support from their mentors, the Graduate School, their academic departments, and other sources. Students also receive assistance with expenses involved in producing the dissertation.
